40 Foreigners Found in Cambodia Illegally and Forced to Work Online in Sihanoukville

Preah Sihanouk Province: Authorities in Preah Sihanouk Province found nearly 40 foreigners, some of whom entered Cambodia illegally and some were forced to work gambling online. This, was confirmed by the spokesman of the Ministry of Interior, Mr. Khieu Sopheak on Saturday, August 29.

The raids took place in two different locations, first was in Village 4, Sangkat 4, Sihanoukville, on the afternoon of August 26, finding illegal immigrants working online gambling.All of them were Chinese. The police also arrested 3 Chinese managers for ongoing questioning.

The second case operation was at 3 pm. The police went to a company called Jin Pei 4, located in Group 17, Village 4, Sangkat 4, Sihanoukville, rescued 5 Malaysians and arrested one for further questioning.

General Khieu Sopheak continued that after interrogating the five Malaysians said that they had come to Cambodia to work for the company.They contacted the company through FACEBOOK advertising salary from $ 1,800 (one thousand eight hundred US dollars) per month to work as a manager.During the trip from Malaysia, the company paid all expenses.(Food and Accommodation) When they arrived in Cambodia, there was a car waiting to pick them up and take them to work in Sihanoukville, where they had to work online gambling section.

He added that after working for about 2 months, the company kept moving them from one company location to another company until reached Jin Pei 4, located in Group 17, Village 4, Sangkat 4, Sihanoukville. on arrival, the company took all passports and mobile phones and signed a one-year employment contract with a salary of only $ 900 to $ 1,000.

While working for Jinpei 4, they where forced to work online and work 17 to 18 hours a day. They where not paid the agreed salary, it was reduced even more.

He added. We are tired of the work. They asked the company to resign but were not allowed until they paid the company $ 22,000. The company threatened to transfer it to another company in Myanmar.

They were so frightened on June 14, 2022,they conspired to ask for help from Malaysian embassy”.

All five did not suffer any physical torture or incarceration while working for the company.The company only threatened and made them to work overtime. However, all five wanted to stop working and return back to their home countries.
